Hello. On SNC mode, the boatswain from Albatross, Harald, lost the ability to teach shield fighting.
Why you guys aren't using jewellery for protection starting from Tamora? It makes the passage of the game much easier up until you take the fight to the orcs in Khorinis.

Protection jewellery is only effective when your HP is much higher than the damage you receive. You can always heal between fights, so, mathematically, what is important is how many hits you can survive before killing the enemy. Imagine the following scenario (e.g. fighting lurkers in the early game): you have 100HP, the enemy hits you for 60 damage. If you use the protection amulet (8 prot, 1000 gold), you will still die in 2 hits, and its effective bonus will be 8*2=16. If you use the health amulet (40 HP, 400 gold), its effective bonus is independent of the number of hits, and you die in 3 hits. On the other hand, if you fight enemies with low damage or you already have lots of HP or armour stacked - e.g. you get 20 hits before dying- the protection amulet will give 8*20=160 effective HP bonus.

The thing is - on high difficulty levels you do not really care about mobs that deal low damage; they are easy as they are - while the top predators in your current area deal so much damage that the protection amulet/ring/belt are nearly meaningless (unless you stack them all and have a ton of HP)

Similar logic but a bit more random and complex with stat amulets - e.g. + 10 strength with 50% skill gives you on average 5-6 extra damage per hit. If you were only dealing 10 damage on average, getting the amulet would mean that you will now kill an enemy 50% faster, meaning receiving fewer hits in the process, etc.

First of all, I was talking about the passage of the game from Tamora onwards, so your example of fight with a lurker in the early game does not apply. Now, if you look at the statistics posted by Hedin from the end of Tamora, his character has 56 defense and 364 life. The vast majority of mobs in Tamora have 140 strength, which means that a character with 56 defense will sustain 84 damage per hit, which means that his character can take 4 hits and a fifth hit will kill him. But a character who invested everything in protection gear (shield, belt, jewellery, helmet) can reach in Tamora 134 defense on legendary. That means he will take only 6 damage per hit, so at 364 life he can take 60 hits before he dies. So, juding by your own logic, that "what is important is how many hits you can survive" , which one is the better ?

Regarding these particular stats - Hedin has quite a bit of health due to SNK being a bit imbalanced (in my opinion) and afaik it is a first run with these settings, so we'll have to wait and see how it changes :) Because of this amount of health, HP jewellery is irrelevant, and in the case you are talking about, full protection will of course make you tanky. The question is whether it is worth trading off that much damage, and that would depend a lot on your playstyle preferences.
Personally, on Tamora, I would upgrade armour (to make belts, but +20 defence comes as a bonus) and take a helmet - that would be 68 armour, but then the rest I would put in primary stat, which is +30 with amulet, +10 for rings (or more, depending on str/dex choice) and +10 with belt. With skill being around 60-70%, that is 30-35 average damage per hit.
So I'd say against strong mobs with high damage and high defence, the primary stat takes priority (but only if your damage is above defence ofc). Cleaning up wolves, etc which die from 1-2 hits either way - defence is better.
And if you are playing ranged, then the primary stat is even more important.
But either way, you can also swap in between. One does not exclude the other if you have enough resources.

Я никогда не беру защиту и все амулеты и кольца в ловкость или силу. Как-то привык так играть.

Against strong mobs with high defense the primary stat takes priority only if you manage to deal more then minimal damage to those mobs. That does not happens in Tamora, simply because at that stage of the game you can't get enough of the primary stat to overcame their defense (over 400 defense). Your 30-35 average increase in damage is not happening against those mobs in Tamora, in chapter 2. In fact, that only start to come true in Khorinis, about the time when you have to go against the orcs. That's why I asked why you don't use protection gear between Tamora and that stage of the game in Khorinis. Keep in mind that quite often you also have to fight against pack of mobs aswell.

@karmis, там где минимальный урон лично мне вообще не важна защита, големы, мракорисы и так далее легко убиваются и ловятся на анимации.
