I think there is a misunderstanding here. There is no separate location named island of thieves, I was talking about the island where you land when you arrive in Khorinis with the team, and where the thieves guild keeps their spoils.
@Divik : Knut death is not scripted, it can be avoided very easy by having the naval battle when most of the crew sleeps. That way you can kill most of the orcs yourself and get more exp. Just make sure that Albin the cook survives because he stays awake at night.
